Newsletter Sponsor Break-even Calculator

Work out how many conversions a newsletter sponsorship needs to pay for itself, for sponsors evaluating a buy and operators justifying their rate.

Your estimate

Expected conversions...
Conversions needed to break even...
Cost per acquisition...
Return on sponsorship spend...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

A sponsor asking whether a slot is worth it is really asking how many customers it must produce before it pays back. If you cannot answer that on a call, the price feels arbitrary. If you can, the conversation shifts from cost to outcome.

The calculator walks the funnel: opens times click-through rate gives clicks, clicks times conversion rate gives conversions, and conversions times value per conversion gives return. It then shows the break-even conversion count and cost per acquisition. The rates are yours to set; the tool does not assume industry averages.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the sponsorship price and the opens the newsletter expects to deliver.
  2. Set the click-through rate, conversion rate and value per conversion you believe are realistic for this offer.
  3. Compare expected conversions to the break-even count; if expected is below break-even, negotiate the price or improve the offer.

What the math assumes

  • Click-through rate is measured against unique opens, not against total subscribers.
  • Every conversion is worth the same value; enter a blended value if you mix leads and closed sales.
  • Break-even counts only the slot price; creative production, landing page work and staff time are excluded unless you add them to the price.
  • Return is calculated on first-touch value only; repeat purchases and referrals are not modeled.
  • All rates are treated as fixed; real results vary with creative, offer and audience fit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a newsletter operator use this to defend a price?

Yes. Run the numbers with the sponsor's own conversion rate and customer value on the call. If the slot breaks even at a handful of customers, the price stops looking expensive.

What if I do not know my conversion rate?

Use the rate from your best performing paid channel as a starting point and run the tool twice, once optimistic and once conservative, to see the range.

Why is cost per acquisition zero?

If the funnel produces zero expected conversions there is nothing to divide by, so the tool returns zero instead of an infinite cost. Raise the click-through or conversion rate above zero to get a real figure.
